"We have the character and strength to bounce back from being two goals down. We knew we were going to create chances and that’s exactly what we did in the second-half."
“It was a derby, so both teams wanted to win and we are delighted to get that win. I think we controlled the game, in the first-half especially. We kept the ball well and created chances, and we were disappointed to go into half-time two goals down. But we have the character and strength to bounce back from being two goals down.”
“We knew we were going to create chances and that’s exactly what we did in the second-half. We took the game to them, we were always on the front foot and I think there was only ever one team that was going to win.”
- Ashley Young (Community Shield 2011: Manchester City 2 - Manchester United 3)

“Hopefully there are many more to come and this is just the start. As a young lad you see all of your heroes climbing up the Wembley steps so it was nice to do it too. It’s great to get the win especially against your local rivals.”
“I have got to stake my claim now. I just want to do well for the club and personally work hard, and see where that gets me, so I am just pleased to be playing.”
- Tom Cleverley (Community Shield 2011: Manchester City 2 - Manchester United 3)

"Centre-back is my main position but if I can contribute from  a different position and if the manager things I can help, then hopefully the more games I get the happier I’ll be."

- Chris Smalling

Ashley Young has praised the “character and strength” of his new teammates following United's sensational 3-2 win over Manchester City in the FA Community Shield at Wembley.
The former Aston Villa midfielder, who made his official United debut in the annual football season curtain raiser on Sunday, was delighted to beat local rivals City and explained why he was sure the Reds would always get the win, despite being two goals down by the half-time break.
“It was a derby, so both teams wanted to win and we are delighted to get that win. I think we controlled the game, in the first-half especially. We kept the ball well and created chances, and we were disappointed to go into half-time two goals down,” Young told MUTV.
“But we have the character and strength to bounce back from being two goals down. We knew we were going to create chances and that’s exactly what we did in the second-half. We took the game to them, we were always on the front foot and I think there was only ever one team that was going to win.”

New players, same old spirit. Sir Alex Ferguson handed four players competitive debuts at Wembley in the Reds' injury-time Community Shield victory on Sunday, but despite the fresh faces United displayed the same never-say-die attitude that has become the hallmark of the manager's modern teams.
In the space of six second-half minutes, goals from Chris Smalling and Nani turned around a two-goal deficit and seized back the momentum Manchester City had stolen at the end of the first period. Then, with the match in the fourth minute of injury time and seemingly poised for penalties, Nani charged down a Vincent Kompany clearance on the halfway line, sprinted clear, rounded Joe Hart in the City goal and slid the ball home to clinch the season's first piece of silverware.
Many had written United off by half-time after goals from Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko – albeit against the run of play – had given the Blues what looked to be an unassailable lead. But changes at the break, including the introduction of debutants Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley, prompted a United fightback that epitomised the strength of character Sir Alex so often speaks of.

The Reds began brightly at Wembley, barely allowing City a kick for the first five minutes and going close when Smalling volleyed goalwards amid a mini melee inside the Blues' penalty area. The young defender, usually deployed as a centre-back, enjoyed plenty of freedom down the right flank and delivered a number of dangerous crosses.

Having unluckily been two down at the break, Sir Alex Ferguson's side came from behind through the Portuguese winger to snatch a derby victory that will live long in the memory
United made the best start, forcing a corner in the first five minutes from which Chris Smalling had a chance to bundle the ball over the line but his effort was blocked on the line.

The first signs of derby animosity showed after twenty minutes when Edin Dzeko and Anderson clashed over a tackle by the Bosnian forward, each earning a yellow card for their angry reactions.

Soon after, Micah Richards was lucky only to receive a yellow for a wayward lunge on debutant Ashley Young just outside the penalty area, and Wayne Rooney went close with the free-kick, curling just over the far post from a tight angle.

City finally created a chance on the half-hour mark, with a slick passing move. Yaya Toure surged forward to supply David Silva, who played a sumptuous through-pass for the advancing James Milner, who, under pressure from two defenders, had his shot deflected past the far post, but a goal kick was harshly given.

Another deflection later saved City’s blushes as Dzeko, part of a wall defending a direct free-kick, saw Nani’s shot bounce off his knee and fly inches past the post.

But against the run of play, City drew first blood when Joleon Lescott evaded his marker to meet Silva’s delightful in-swinging free-kick to place a precision header into the top corner.

And with the momentum suddenly theirs, the Citizens immediately pushed forward again, and when Patrice Evra brought Milner down there were suggestions that he had denied a goalscoring opportunity, but only a yellow was awarded and Silva squandered the set-piece.

Full of confidence after the breakthrough, City sent their neighbours into shock just on the stroke of half-time when a powerful swerving shot from Dzeko flew past David de Gea into the net from some way out, although the young Spanish keeper was late to get down and really should have saved.

Sir Alex Ferguson reacted by injecting youth into the team at half-time, with Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Tom Cleverley all replacing more experienced heads at the break.

It seemed to work, with United again starting the half much brighter, and were rewarded quickly when Smalling pulled off a stylish mid-air finish, having been given a worrying amount of space in the City box to reach Young’s free-kick.

And just minutes later, with City in shellshock, a great team move from United saw them draw level. Cleverley, Welbeck and Rooney were all involved with a devastating series of quick passes on the edge of the box that loosed Nani for a decisive finish, giving the Red Devils their just reward for a barnstorming start to the second period.

United were firmly on top, and with City trying to get forward to re-establish momentum, Ferguson’s side looked dangerous on the counter. Lescott made a great tackle halfway through the second period to rob the ball from an ominously-approaching Rooney.

But with the league champions not pressing their advantage home for a winner, City began to recover their confidence, Richards nearly sneaking a late winner with a powerful header from a far-post corner, but de Gea reacted well to keep it out.

Dzeko and Nani also had late chances saved at either end but just as it seemed that the game was destined for penalties, a catastrophic error from Kompany allowed Nani to burst through one-on-one with Hart in the final minute of stoppage time, and he made no mistake, rounding the keeper to slot in a simple, and deserved, winner.
